What's the difference between a barber and a stylist?
Ever wondered what the difference between a licensed cosmetologist and barber are? The differences are important to know if you are considering ditching mom's stylist!
Let's start with the regulations! In the state of Utah the governing tests for licenses are different. I can't personally speak for what the cosmetologists testing is like. However, barbers have a written and a practical exam. Our practical consists of doing a tapered haircut, and a straight razor shave. Seems simple enough. Cosmologists are taught to do hair, manicures, pedicures, etc...and I imagine their test includes many of these services.
Now on to technique..I think it is best stated by saying "it's like speaking two different languages." Barbers focus on short hair styles, the styles typically worn by men. A cosmologist is more of a "jack of all trades" focusing mainly on women's hair, typically longer and styled differently. Barbershops are traditionally the man's provider. however we will do a woman's hair if it is short!
We do not cut traditional women's styles due to the fact that we are not trained on it. We are not the shop to come to if you're looking for layers, hair dye, nails...however if you want a classic cut with a straight razor shave, we got you!
The barber license in Utah can be obtained after proper tests are passed, and they have at least 1,000 hours of practical experience (which most of us get from going to a barber school) There are apprentice programs in Utah, however they have a few different regulations.
Wonder if your barber is licensed? You can go to the states website and see! The division of professional licensing website allows you to search by name, and will list any violations they may have.
